I found Zote in Deepnest. Zote cannot die in Deepnest. If Zote is still in his cage in the colosseum, simply refight the first trial to face him as a boss. If not, check out the spots where you rescue him in deepnest or greenpath. If his mask is at either of those locations, you've failed to save him.

If you don't leave him to die the first time you see him he never dies. He just hangs there squawking forever. You don't have to deal with him later though, which is nice. Actually he won’t.
