In 1999, I started researching sundown towns. These are overwhelmingly white communities that, for decades, stayed that way on purpose. The term derives from the signs that some towns posted at their corporate limits with warnings such as, "[N-word] Don't Let the Sun Go Down On You in Hawthorne," to quote the anti-greeting at the edge of Hawthorne, California, a suburb of Los Angeles.Sep 1, 2006 · Sundown towns limit equal access to housing, exacerbate prejudice, and stifle the growth of towns and suburbs (pp. 301, 358–60).
