John deere gator clutch problems.
New member. Had a similar problem on my 6x4 gator--sounded like piston rattle. thought it was a secondary clutch, but finally figured out it was the drive chains slapping because they were loose. Tightened up and greased and now quiet. sounded like a big bucks problem, but fixed with a little wrenching.

Been that way for a while, my first time pulling / attempting a clutch rebuild. Gator is about 700hrs. There was a slight "creak/squeak to the spring" when compressing by hand, spring looks ok (some of the red paint flaked off top/bottom) - will probably replace anyway.

But likely it is possible that the range shift is at a mid point, and not engaged. There are three speeds forward plus reverse.

Set it low. Now, place trans in neutral, lock park brake. Start engine and rev it up to activate clutches. Run wide open for a few seconds. Let it fully come back to idle. Observe clutch on engine. Now shut off engine. If you hear a "click/pop" from the engine clutch, it isnt disengaging properly.

If it shifts, you either need a new shift cable or it needs adjustment. If it will not shift, the problem is the shifter in the transmission and transmission has to be repaired. If in high, do it in low. The engine will race up like crazy in low until it reaches about 5MPH, but then the engine will sound normal. Slow speed in high will heat up the belt and can cause problems with the clutch. Hope this helps. HIGH range.. That makes sense MBDiagMan.. Thanks for the insight.
