And given their resistance to the cold, most hens will continue laying through the winter months. They lay brown eggs with their egg size being larger than most chickens. The first time we put 7 under her and she hatched 6. All of them were pullets. This time, I put 11 under her. She ate one of them a few days before she was supposed to hatch. No clue why, but I figured it was the way of a broody hen. 11 seems fine under her. She's got 9 eggs under her right now and 4 chicks.
