The knock sensor is placed on the best place on the engine to sense engine knock. However, the sensor is in the worst place for it to be easily replaced. When placing it in a different spot you run the risk of pickup other engine vibrations that are not knock related. So I weighed the bad/good and came up with the resistor mod.

Relocating it is cheaper and IMO is the send best place to detect knocks. 1996. Posted October 18, 2009. I took a quick look and it looks like a good easy fix. The only thing I don't like is relocating the sensor to a different spot then the ECM is calibrated for. It will read slightly different then the stock position and may or may not be more or less sensitive to knocking.
If there is no knock sensor present, you will wind up with a hard fault that will keep the check engine lamp on continuously. Also, the truck will go into a more conservative driving mode to prevent knocking. Definitely try all the normal maintenance items first before looking at the knock sensor. Also check your brakes for a sticking caliper, could cause that drop in MPG.
